Creating double Four-Patch block
SASHING, CORNERSTONES, AND SETTING TRIANGLES
Now it is time to cut your sashing, cornerstones, and setting triangles. Refer to the following quilt illustration.
Start by counting the number of light green sashing strips and cornerstones you’ll need. Did you come up with 80 sashing strips and 49 cornerstones? Great!
How many side-setting triangles? 14!
Formula: 80 sashing strips × 8½˝ long (by 1½˝ wide): 80 × 8.5″ = 680″ ÷ 42″ = 16.19, or 17 strips
Formula: 49 cornerstones × 1½˝ square (cut) = 73.5″ ÷ 42″ = 1.75, or 2 strips
Formula: 14 side triangles ÷ 4 = 3.5, or 4 squares
To figure the size, remember the two-part formula from Lesson Three (page 38):
(# of blocks per row × size of block) + (# of sashing strips per row × width of sashing)
This formula gives the straight measurement needed to continue figuring the yardage for the side-setting and corner triangles.
Let’s use the very first row with only one block in it:
(1 block × 8″) + (2 sashings × 1″ wide) = 8″ + 2″ = 10″ × 1.414 = 14.14 + 3″ = 17.14″
In ruler language this is 17¼˝. You need four of these squares.
Your fabric width is only 42″, or 42″ ÷ 17″ = 2.47. In this case, we will round down, because you can only get two usable size squares from one fabric strip.
For the corner triangles, you need two squares. Again, the width of the block plus the sashing equals 10″; add 2″ to this to find that you need to cut 2 – 12″ squares for your corner triangles.
Cut:
17 strips 1½˝ wide of the light green
2 strips 1½˝ wide of the dark green
2 strips 17¼˝ wide of the large print
1 strip 12″ wide of the large print
Subcut the light green strips into 8½˝ lengths and the dark green into 1½˝ lengths. Go ahead and cut your 4 – 17¼˝ squares and 2 – 12″ squares for your side-setting and corner triangles and subcut them diagonally.
Now you are ready to go to your design wall and lay out your quilt.
